Meet the dyer
There is a small village up above the Lake of Zurich in Switzerland, a village nestled in-between hills, characterized by single linden trees crowning the tops. It's farmers' country, it's cozy and beautiful and it has amazing views of the Alps... it's called Hirzel and is the place where we live and work and also where we dye our silk yarns.
Silk has a long-standing tradition in Switzerland. It used to be one of the most important branches of Swiss economy from the 17th to the early 20th century. Zurich was an important centre for silk trade and manufacturing during that period. At its peak, there were more than 90 silk companies and more than 12'000 silk-weavers in Zurich.
Siidegarte yarn is part of that long tradition. We source it from a 4th-generation-family-run silk spinnery at the Lake of Lucerne, not far from where we live.
Siidegarte was founded a few years ago by Gaby and myself, Fides. It is now run by myself as a family company, with all the member of my family working and helping, knitting and advising along!
This is an amazing journey, a colourful adventure of continuing the Swiss silk tradition our way: by hand-dyeing the highest-quality Swiss silk yarns with utmost care for the fibre and a true love for beautiful colours, and sending those skeins out into the world to be turned into stunning knitwear, to be cherished and loved.
Thanks for coming by, enjoy browsing our beautiful yarns,
